Delirium tremens and the alcoholic
74What is...
Delirium tremens are a symptom of alcohol withdrawal. An alcohol detox program may be the only safe way to help an alcoholic recover from this potentially fatal psychological mental condition that also affects the body. Here you will find answers to What is delirum?, What are tremens?, What are delirium tremens?, and What causes delirium tremens in the alcoholic personality?.
What is delirium ?
The famed artist Van Gogh was considered to be dependant of alcohol. He was a creative person trapped in a world of solitude and he was often institutionalized in mental hospitals or sanitariums as they were once called. One of the characteristics of the alcoholic is solitude.
Delirium is mental confusion that varies in levels of intensity. It is a common syndrome amongst the very old and among extreme neurotics and the psychotic. Delirium can be induced by alcohol or other mind altering substances. Delirious people often present themselves as being confused, incoherent, or disoriented. Extreme delirium can produce hallucinations or delusional behaviour. Extremely delusional behaviour can lead a delirious person to harm himself or herself or others.
What are Tremens ?
Tremens are tremors or the shakes. Anyone who has drank alcohol beverages beyond the limit that the body and the brain can process the alcohol knows that the morning after is when the real price of over indulging is paid. One of the reaction of the body is to work harder in order to process the alcohol. One way of doing this is by vibrating at a higher frequency. Most people get mild tremens and recover fully within a few hours and go on living until the next festivity.
What are delirium tremens ?
The DT's are a combination of altered mental normal behaviour and the bodies reaction to alcohol toxicity. It is an adverse reaction to alcohol induction above the limits of tolerance that the body can process. The demons of alcohol are released into the body and the mind reacts by providing a paradox of reality. These hallucinations are delusions of reality according to the acceptable understanding of normal behaviour defined by professional health scientists. The term "spirits" is often used to define alcohol and any alcoholic who has passed through a detox treatment center can tell you why the word spirit justifies the mental condition called alcohol blood poisoning.
Shaking your way through a delusional mental state where all types of demons dictate your every thought can lead to very serious consequences. The "black out" is a mental state reached when too much alcohol renders a person behaving or reacting without conscience to the id part of the mind. It could be said that the "black out" is the ultimate zone of the total idiot. Put an idiot who has self medicated himself into a spiritual realm of illusions into a car and there go I were it not but for the grace of g-d. Too much alcohol in the blood stream can be fatal.
The alcoholic and delirium tremens.
As stated before alcohol abuse is common among people who over indulge socially. Not every social drinker is an alcoholic however. The alcoholic is a person who is fully dependent on alcohol. There is such a thing as borderline alcoholism and for every full blown alcoholic there are likely a hundred borderline alcoholics who may push the limits of alcohol abuse and fit the bill as alcohol dependent individuals.
The full blown alcoholic can not function without alcohol in the blood stream. This is very taxing on the systems of the body. Alcohol is hydrated sugar. The body produces it naturally and it is a highly toxic fuel necessary for the production of energy. If the body were to burn all of it's sugars in a moment the body would spontaneously explode. That is why the body as mechanisms for storing sugars which it will later use to produce energy. Adding alcohol to the body simply is not smart but it is a social behaviour that is very promoted. Alcohol relieves the mind from inhibition and many people love that factor. The alcoholic is dependant on the alcohol and sometimes the mind is so conditioned to the mind altering factor that an alcoholic can consume excessively large volumes of spirits without showing much of a change in behaviour.
But something somewhere always gives when nature demands the truth. Nature never lies and this is often how people who consider themselves only social drinkers often find the real meaning of alcoholism. Systems begin to shut down due to the toxicity level in the blood. When this happens the alcoholic will either die of blood poisoning or he or she will check themselves into an alcohol abuse treatment center.
Through the doors of detox centers many alcohol abusers have found a new life and a journey of alcohol rehabilitation and freedom from alcohol abuse. Others simply swing around the revolving doors of these alcohol rehab centers in an endless and futile battle that leads to toxic death. On the way they lose money, loved ones, self respect, freedom, and pretty much everything else that the demons of alcohol can take from them.
What causes delirium tremens in the alcoholic ?
That was the question but I believe as always I have strayed off on tangents in my attempt to provide an answer that could have been much simpler.
The short version - DTs are those freaky mind creatures who find themselves controlling you while you sweat through the shakes of alcohol detox somewhere in a ditch or in a drug rehab treatment center.
